Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Explain the origin of the division between Sunni and Shi'a Muslims.

    Model answer

It began as a dispute over the succession to the Prophet Muhammad in 632, with Shi'a Muslims holding that leadership belonged to Ali and his descendants, and separate law, ritual and clerical structures grew out of it.

  2. 2

Who founded the Muslim Brotherhood, and what did it want?

    Model answer

Hassan al-Banna founded it in Egypt in 1928, seeking to restore Islam as the basis of state and society through preaching, welfare, schools and clinics rather than by copying Western models.

  3. 3

How did the Brotherhood's relations with the Egyptian state develop after 1952?

    Model answer

Early cooperation with the Free Officers gave way to a ban and mass imprisonment after an attempt on Nasser's life in 1954, and the movement was afterwards tolerated only intermittently while remaining the best-organised opposition.

  4. 4

State what Khomeini's doctrine of the guardianship of the jurist asserted.

    Model answer

That in the absence of the hidden Imam, government should be exercised by the leading religious jurist, which became the basis of the Supreme Leader's authority in the Islamic Republic.

  5. 5

How did the Islamic Revolution of 1979 affect the wider region?

    Model answer

It showed that a popular Islamist movement could topple a Western-backed monarchy, alarmed the Gulf monarchies, sharpened Sunni-Shi'a antagonism, and encouraged Iran to sponsor movements abroad.

  6. 6

How did Hezbollah emerge, and what did it become?

    Model answer

It grew out of Lebanon's Shi'a community during the Israeli invasion of 1982 with Iranian and Syrian backing, and combined guerrilla warfare with welfare provision and, in time, seats in parliament and government.
