Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why was the League of Nations set up?

    Model answer

It was intended to prevent another war by giving states a forum to settle disputes, providing collective security against aggressors, promoting disarmament and tackling international social problems.

  2. 2

Describe the main organs of the League.

    Model answer

An Assembly of all members meeting annually, a smaller Council containing permanent great-power members, a permanent Secretariat, an international court of justice and specialist bodies such as the organisation dealing with labour conditions.

  3. 3

Give three structural weaknesses of the League.

    Model answer

The United States never joined, decisions of substance required unanimity so any interested party could block action, and it depended on members' willingness to apply sanctions that damaged their own trade.

  4. 4

How did the League handle the Greek-Bulgarian crisis of 1925?

    Model answer

After Greek troops invaded Bulgaria following a frontier incident, the League ordered a withdrawal and Greece obeyed and paid compensation, which appeared to show collective security working against a small state.

  5. 5

What happened in the Corfu Incident of 1923?

    Model answer

After an Italian general was murdered on Greek soil, Mussolini bombarded and occupied Corfu; the matter was settled outside the League by the Conference of Ambassadors, Greece was made to pay compensation, and a great power had used force and been rewarded for it.

  6. 6

What was the Conference of Ambassadors?

    Model answer

It was the body of the victors' representatives that supervised the execution of the peace treaties, and its readiness to settle disputes independently duplicated and undercut the League's role.
