  1. 1

Where did the revolutions of 1848 in Italy begin?

They began in Sicily in January 1848 with a rising in Palermo against Bourbon rule, which forced Ferdinand II to grant a constitution before news of the revolution in Paris arrived.

  2. 2

Which rulers granted constitutions in the spring of 1848?

    Model answer

  3. 3

  4. 4

What happened in Venice in 1848?

    Model answer

Manin was freed from prison, led a rising that expelled the Austrians, and proclaimed the Republic of St Mark, which held out longer than any other revolutionary government.

  5. 5

Why did Charles Albert declare war on Austria in 1848?

    Model answer

He hoped to lead the national movement and annex Lombardy while Austria was in disarray, and to keep the revolution in respectable monarchical hands; his slogan was that Italy would do it herself.

How did the first war of independence go?

    Model answer

After early success at Goito the Piedmontese were beaten by Radetzky at Custoza in July 1848, gave up Milan and accepted the armistice of Salasco.
