Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What was the GNCTU, and why did it fail?

    Model answer

Owen's Grand National Consolidated Trades Union of 1834 tried to unite all trades in a single body and briefly claimed a vast membership, but it had no funds for long disputes and collapsed within months when employers imposed the 'document' renouncing union membership.

  2. 2

Why were the Tolpuddle Martyrs transported?

    Model answer

Six Dorset farm labourers led by George Loveless were convicted in 1834 of administering unlawful oaths while forming a union lodge and sentenced to seven years' transportation, though a huge petitioning campaign won them a pardon two years later.

  3. 3

Why did Chartism emerge in the later 1830s?

    Model answer

Working men felt betrayed by a Reform Act that had enfranchised the middle classes alone, hated the New Poor Law, had seen trade unionism beaten, and were hit hard by the trade depression and dear food from 1837.

  4. 4

State the six points of the People's Charter.

    Model answer

Universal manhood suffrage, the secret ballot, no property qualification for members, payment of members, equal electoral districts and annual parliaments.

  5. 5

Where did Chartism draw its strongest support?

    Model answer

From the industrial north and the Midlands, south Wales and central Scotland, above all among handloom weavers, framework knitters and other trades being undercut by machinery, with much support from women and from Nonconformist chapels.

  6. 6

How did Chartist leaders differ over methods?

    Model answer

Lovett and the London artisans favoured moral force — petitions, education and respectability — while O'Connor, whose Northern Star gave the movement a national voice, spoke the language of physical force and mass pressure without ever leading a rising.
