Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What was the political situation in India and Central Asia in the early sixteenth century?

    Model answer

Northern India was ruled by the Lodi sultans of Delhi, whose Afghan nobles were rebellious, with independent Rajput and regional kingdoms beyond them, while in Central Asia the Timurid princes had been driven out of Samarkand and Bukhara by the Uzbeks.

  2. 2

    Identify Babur.

    Model answer

Babur was a Timurid prince of Fergana, descended from Timur on his father's side and Chinggis Khan on his mother's, who after losing Samarkand established himself at Kabul in 1504 and from there raided and then invaded northern India.

  3. 3

What happened at Panipat in 1526?

    Model answer

Babur defeated and killed Ibrahim Lodi, the sultan of Delhi, on 21 April 1526, opening Delhi and Agra to him and founding Mughal rule in India.

  4. 4

Explain why Babur won at Panipat despite being heavily outnumbered.

    Model answer

He anchored his line behind a barricade of carts, used field artillery and matchlock men trained by Ottoman gunners against massed infantry and elephants, and sent cavalry in the tulughma manoeuvre round both flanks to encircle a crowded army that could not deploy.

  5. 5

How did the weaknesses of his opponents help Babur?

    Model answer

Ibrahim Lodi had alienated his Afghan nobles, some of whom invited Babur in or deserted in battle, and there was no cooperation between the Lodis, the Rajputs and the Afghan rulers of Bengal and Bihar, so Babur faced his enemies one at a time.

  6. 6

Why was the battle of Khanwa in 1527 important?

    Model answer

Babur's victory over Rana Sanga of Mewar broke the Rajput confederacy that had hoped to take Delhi for itself and confirmed that the Mughals, not the Rajputs, would inherit the Lodi empire.
