Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How did treaty-making change between 1851 and the later 1860s?

    Model answer

The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851 defined broad territories and bought safe passage for wagon trains and forts, whereas treaties such as Medicine Lodge and the second Fort Laramie agreement confined peoples to defined reservations in return for rations, schools and farming instruction.

  2. 2

Why did the Sand Creek massacre of 1864 make peace on the plains harder to reach?

    Model answer

Colorado militia under Chivington attacked a Cheyenne and Arapaho camp that had been promised protection and killed about a hundred and fifty people, most of them women and children, so Plains peoples no longer trusted American promises and retaliatory war spread across the plains.

  3. 3

    What was Red Cloud's War?

    Model answer

Lakota resistance to forts on the Bozeman Trail between 1866 and 1868 included the destruction of Fetterman's command of eighty-one men and ended with the army abandoning the forts, the one clear Native success.

  4. 4

How did the search for resources break the treaties?

    Model answer

Miners and settlers ignored reservation boundaries whenever minerals were found, and the confirmation of gold in the Black Hills after Custer's expedition of 1874 led the government to demand land it had guaranteed to the Lakota for ever.

  5. 5

What happened at the Little Bighorn?

    Model answer

In 1876 a large Lakota and Cheyenne encampment under Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse destroyed Custer and about two hundred and sixty men of the Seventh Cavalry, which provoked a far larger army campaign that ended Plains resistance.

  6. 6

How did resistance end elsewhere in the West?

    Model answer

Chief Joseph led the Nez Perce on a long fighting retreat before surrendering in 1877, and Apache resistance ended with Geronimo's surrender in 1886.
