  1. 1

What were the Bye and Main Plots of 1603?

    Model answer

The Bye Plot was a scheme by two priests to kidnap the King and force toleration; the Main Plot aimed to replace him with Arbella Stuart with Spanish help, and implicated Sir Walter Raleigh.

  2. 2

    Describe the Gunpowder Plot.

    Model answer

Robert Catesby and a group of Catholic gentry placed some thirty-six barrels of gunpowder beneath the House of Lords to destroy King and Parliament at the opening on 5 November 1605; an anonymous letter to Lord Monteagle led to the discovery of the cellar and the arrest of Guy Fawkes.

  3. 3

Outline the consequences of the Gunpowder Plot.

    Model answer

New recusancy legislation in 1606, the imposition of an oath of allegiance, the entrenchment of popular anti-Catholicism through an annual thanksgiving, and the ruin of Catholic hopes of toleration.

  4. 4

What did the Oath of Allegiance of 1606 require, and why was it divisive?

    Model answer

It required Catholics to deny the Pope's power to depose kings; many English Catholics were willing to swear it as a test of civil loyalty, but the Pope condemned it, so it split the Catholic community.

  5. 5

Roughly how large was the Catholic community, and where was it strongest?

    Model answer

A small minority of the population, probably one or two per cent as active recusants, concentrated in the households of the gentry and in the north and west.

  6. 6

How did fear of Catholicism shape political attitudes to royal policy?

    Model answer

Any sign of favour to Catholics, whether the Queen's own conversion, Catholics at court, the Spanish Match or the rise of Arminian clergy, was read as evidence of a popish design against English liberties and religion.
