Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Where did the demand for a general council come from before Trent?

    Model answer

From German grievances against Rome, from Charles V, from the conciliar tradition and from reform-minded cardinals; Adrian VI had already admitted publicly that the corruption began at Rome.

  2. 2

Why had earlier popes resisted calling a council?

    Model answer

They feared the revival of conciliarism, which held that a council's authority stood above the pope's, and they feared that the emperor would control its agenda.

  3. 3

What did the reform commission of 1537 conclude?

    Model answer

That the abuses afflicting the Church flowed from the papal court's treatment of ecclesiastical office as a source of income.

  4. 4

What was the significance of the colloquy at Regensburg in 1541?

    Model answer

It was the last serious attempt at doctrinal compromise with the Protestants; the agreed formula on justification was repudiated in both Rome and Wittenberg, convincing many that only definition would serve.

  5. 5

Describe Paul III's role in bringing the council about.

    Model answer

He was the first pope to treat a council as a genuine objective, appointing reformers, persevering through the failed summonses to Mantua and Vicenza, and finally opening Trent in December 1545.

  6. 6

What circumstances made the first session possible?

    Model answer

Peace between Charles V and Francis I in 1544 removed the obstacle of Habsburg-Valois war, and Trent was chosen as a compromise site, an imperial city but Italian in language and easy of access from Rome.
