Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What befell the crusading armies in Anatolia?

    Model answer

Conrad's army was ambushed and broken by the Seljuks near Dorylaeum in October 1147, and Louis's army was harassed all the way across Anatolia and badly mauled at Mount Cadmus, so both arrived in Syria a fraction of their original strength.

  2. 2

How did Louis VII abandon much of his army in 1148?

    Model answer

He and the nobility took ship from the Anatolian coast to Antioch because there was not enough shipping for everyone, leaving the infantry to continue overland, where most of them died.

  3. 3

What did Raymond of Antioch urge Louis VII to do, and why did Louis refuse?

    Model answer

Raymond wanted a joint attack on Aleppo to recover Edessa, but Louis had vowed to go to Jerusalem, distrusted Raymond and had quarrelled with him over Eleanor of Aquitaine, so he marched south instead.

  4. 4

What was decided at the council of Acre in 1148?

    Model answer

The kings, the queen mother and the barons of Jerusalem agreed to attack Damascus rather than march north against Nur ad-Din.

  5. 5

Why was the choice of Damascus so damaging?

    Model answer

Damascus was the one Muslim power allied to the Kingdom of Jerusalem against Zengi's successors, so attacking it destroyed that alliance and pushed the city into the arms of Nur ad-Din.

  6. 6

Describe the course of the siege of Damascus.

    Model answer

The crusaders first attacked from the western orchards where they had water and cover, then shifted to the bare eastern side where they had neither, and withdrew after only four days as relief forces approached.
