Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe the condition of Russia in 1645.

    Model answer

Russia was an enormous, thinly populated and overwhelmingly agrarian state with few towns, poor communications, little industry and an army of noble levies and musketeers, cut off from western Europe by Poland and Sweden and by the hostility of its Orthodox Church to foreign ideas.

  2. 2

What problems faced the new Tsar in 1645?

    Model answer

Alexis came to the throne at sixteen and depended on his tutor Morozov, so government fell to court factions; the treasury was empty, taxation was resented, and the Salt Tax riot of 1648 in Moscow showed how fragile order was.

  3. 3

How would you describe the personality and rule of Alexis?

    Model answer

Alexis was pious, well read and personally mild, which earned him the name of the Quiet Tsar, but he was a convinced autocrat who ruled through favourites and secretariats and expanded the crown's control over church, nobility and peasantry.

  4. 4

State what the Law Code of 1649 did to the Russian peasantry.

    Model answer

The Ulozhenie abolished the time limit on recovering runaways, so peasants and their descendants were tied permanently to their landlord's estate; serfdom became hereditary and legally complete.

  5. 5

Why did the nobility want the Law Code of 1649?

    Model answer

Service nobles complained that magnates and monasteries lured away their peasants, leaving them without the labour that paid for their military service, so binding the peasants permanently secured the crown's cheap army and bought noble loyalty.

  6. 6

What changes did Patriarch Nikon make to the Russian Church?

    Model answer

From 1653 Nikon revised service books and rituals to match contemporary Greek practice, ordering the sign of the cross to be made with three fingers rather than two and altering prayers, processions and the spelling of the name of Jesus.
