Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How did Charles come to be king of Spain in 1516?

    Model answer

He was the son of Juana and Philip of Burgundy and the grandson of Ferdinand and Isabella; with his mother judged incapable and confined, he was proclaimed king jointly with her, and Cisneros governed until he arrived in 1517, a seventeen-year-old raised in Flanders who spoke no Castilian.

  2. 2

List the territories Charles had inherited by 1519.

    Model answer

Castile with Navarre, Granada and the Indies, the Crown of Aragon with Naples, Sicily and Sardinia, the Burgundian Netherlands and Franche-Comté, and the Austrian Habsburg lands, to which he added election as Holy Roman Emperor.

  3. 3

What were Charles's priorities by 1519, and how did they affect Spain?

    Model answer

Defending his scattered inheritance, resisting France and upholding the imperial title came first, which meant Spain was expected to supply money and men for causes decided elsewhere, and to accept a largely absent king.

  4. 4

Give two examples of Charles's reliance on foreigners that angered Castilians.

    Model answer

The Burgundian Chièvres dominated government and enriched himself, and the archbishopric of Toledo, the richest see in Spain, was given in 1518 to his nephew, a young foreigner; the regency was then left to Adrian of Utrecht.

  5. 5

What immediately provoked the Comunero revolt?

    Model answer

Charles summoned the Cortes to Corunna in 1520, pressed it for a further grant to pay for his imperial coronation, and then left the country with the money, leaving a foreign regent behind.

  6. 6

    What did the Comuneros want?

    Model answer

They demanded that the king reside in Spain, that offices be reserved to Castilians, that taxation be controlled by the Cortes and the towns, and that the wealth of Castile should not be spent abroad.
