  1. 1

What was the Spanish Fury, and what did it produce?

    Model answer

Unpaid Spanish troops mutinied and sacked Antwerp in November 1576, killing thousands; the outrage drove all seventeen provinces together in the Pacification of Ghent, which demanded the withdrawal of Spanish troops and suspended the heresy laws while still professing loyalty to the king.

  2. 2

How did Don John's governorship go?

    Model answer

He was forced to accept the Pacification and send the troops away, then seized Namur in 1577 and recalled them; he beat the rebel army at Gembloux in 1578 but could not exploit the victory, and he died later that year.

  3. 3

Explain the difference between the Unions of Arras and Utrecht of 1579.

    Model answer

The Catholic and largely Walloon provinces of the south formed the Union of Arras and made terms with Philip, while Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland and others formed the Union of Utrecht as a permanent defensive alliance in which no member would make a separate peace; the split between north and south dates from these agreements.

  4. 4

Why was Parma so much more successful than his predecessors?

    Model answer

He combined outstanding generalship and siegecraft with political skill, offering the southern Catholic nobility guarantees of their religion and privileges to detach them from the rebels; he took Maastricht, Bruges, Ghent, Brussels and finally Antwerp in 1585, and restored Catholic worship as he went, driving Protestant merchants and craftsmen northwards.

  5. 5

Assess William of Orange as a leader of the revolt.

    Model answer

He was its indispensable political leader — a propagandist, negotiator and organiser who kept provinces of different faiths in one cause and worked for a settlement of religious peace under the old liberties — but he was repeatedly beaten in the field and never a match for Alva or Parma as a commander.

  6. 6

What were the effects of the assassination of William of Orange in 1584?

    Model answer

It removed the one figure who held the revolt together and was followed by the fall of the southern towns, but it also horrified opinion and hardened resistance; leadership passed to the States General with Oldenbarnevelt and, militarily, to William's son Maurice, and the north developed republican institutions instead of finding another prince.
