There were eight wars, and the first followed the massacre of a Protestant congregation at Vassy in March 1562.

Protestants drew money and troops from England and the German princes, while Catholics received Spanish and papal subsidies and, after 1584, an outright alliance with Philip II.

Describe the Catholic League and explain why it was dangerous to the crown.
Model answer
It was a Catholic movement of nobles, clergy and townsmen first formed in 1576 and revived in 1584 to exclude a Protestant successor, and it became dangerous because it took foreign money, controlled Paris and other great towns, and claimed to judge the king's fitness to rule.

Decades of devastated harvests, ruined trade and depopulation, massacres and iconoclasm on both sides, and long stretches in which whole provinces obeyed no royal authority.

How were the civil wars finally ended?
Model answer
Henry IV converted in 1593, reconciled the League leaders by purchase and pardon, defeated Spain and made peace at Vervins in 1598, and issued the Edict of Nantes in the same year.
