Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe the social hierarchy of Qing China.

    Model answer

A Confucian order which placed the scholar-gentry at the top, then peasants, artisans and merchants, with soldiers and outcast 'mean people' below, while the Manchu banner elite stood apart with its own privileges.

  2. 2

How did Confucianism shape social relations?

    Model answer

It taught hierarchy and obedience through the five relationships and filial piety, so authority in family, village and state rested on the deference of the young to the old and of inferiors to superiors.

  3. 3

What was the position of women under Manchu rule?

    Model answer

Women were subordinate throughout life under the 'three obediences' to father, husband and son, had no right to education, property or divorce, and in gentry families had their feet bound.

  4. 4

Why did footbinding persist despite the suffering it caused?

    Model answer

It marked a family's respectability and made a daughter marriageable into the gentry, so parents accepted the cruelty as the price of status.

  5. 5

What were the main features of rural society in Qing China?

    Model answer

Villages dominated by landlords and clan lineages, tenants paying high rents in kind, and a gentry that settled disputes, ran relief and mediated with the magistrate.

  6. 6

Give two social changes in the later Manchu period.

    Model answer

The treaty ports created new classes of compradors, merchants and industrial workers, and the abolition of the examinations in 1905 destroyed the traditional route to status and sent students into modern and foreign schools.
