- 2 things to know
- Unit group 1
Overview
Recall questions on Conservative organisation, the social and labour reforms of 1875, the Suez Canal shares, the Royal Titles Act, the Bulgarian atrocities, the Congress of Berlin, imperial wars and defeat in 1880.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which imperial wars embarrassed the government at the end of the ministry?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How was Conservative party organisation improved after 1867?
Model answer
The National Union of Conservative and Constitutional Associations was set up in 1867 to link local associations, and from 1870 John Gorst ran a Central Office that found candidates, managed registration and built constituency machinery.
- 2
Name three social reforms of 1875 and state what each did.
Model answer
The Artisans' Dwellings Act empowered councils to clear slums and rebuild, the Public Health Act consolidated sanitary law and obliged authorities to appoint medical officers, and the Sale of Food and Drugs Act made the adulteration of food an offence.
- 3
What did the labour legislation of 1875 give the trade unions?
Model answer
The Conspiracy and Protection of Property Act legalised peaceful picketing and stopped acts done in a trade dispute being treated as criminal conspiracy, and the Employers and Workmen Act made breach of contract a civil matter for both sides instead of a crime for the workman alone.
- 4
Name three further reforms of the 1874–1880 ministry.
Model answer
The Factory Act of 1874 fixed a ten-hour day in textile mills, Sandon's Education Act of 1876 made parents responsible for their children's schooling and set up attendance committees, and the Merchant Shipping Act of 1876 required a load line to stop overloaded ships being sent to sea.
- 5
Why is Disraeli's social legislation often judged disappointing?
Model answer
Most of it was permissive rather than compulsory, so councils could ignore it — only a handful of towns used the slum clearance powers in the first years — and much of the drafting and drive came from Cross at the Home Office rather than from Disraeli himself.
- 6
Why did Disraeli buy the Suez Canal shares in 1875?
Model answer
The Khedive of Egypt's bankruptcy put his holding on the market, and Disraeli borrowed from Rothschild to buy it, giving Britain a large stake in the shortest route to India and a dramatic demonstration of imperial vigour.
