Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How effective was opposition to the regime before 1939?

    Model answer

It was fragmented and dangerous: the Social Democrats worked from exile, the Communists were broken by arrests, and dissent was mostly confined to private grumbling, youth subcultures and individual churchmen.

  2. 2

Describe Nazi policy towards the Christian churches.

    Model answer

Hitler signed a Concordat with the Vatican in 1933 and set up a Nazified Reich Church for Protestants, but harassed clergy who resisted through the Confessing Church, imprisoned Niemöller and provoked a papal protest in 1937.

  3. 3

Contrast Schacht's New Plan of 1934 with Goering's Four Year Plan of 1936.

    Model answer

The New Plan controlled imports and currency and used bilateral trade deals to secure raw materials cheaply, while the Four Year Plan pushed autarky and synthetic substitutes to make Germany ready for war within four years.

  4. 4

Give three ways the Nazis cut unemployment from about six million to under half a million by 1938.

    Model answer

They used public works such as the motorways, the reintroduction of conscription in 1935 and rearmament orders to industry, helped by removing women and Jews from the official count.

  5. 5

What replaced the trade unions after May 1933, and what did it offer workers instead of union rights?

    Model answer

The German Labour Front under Robert Ley enrolled workers and employers together and banned strikes, while its Strength through Joy programme provided subsidised holidays, cruises, sport and a savings scheme for a people's car.

  6. 6

    Summarise Nazi policy towards women.

    Model answer

Women were pushed out of employment and towards motherhood by marriage loans and the Mother's Cross, though labour shortages after 1936 drew many of them back into the workforce.
