Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why did Frederick Barbarossa's expedition fail?

    Model answer

His huge army was worn down by the length of the land route and by Byzantine obstruction on the way, and when he drowned crossing a river in Cilicia in 1190 there was no one whose authority could hold the army together, so most of it turned back.

  2. 2

What did Richard I achieve on his way to the Holy Land?

    Model answer

He seized Cyprus in 1191, which gave Outremer a secure and productive base close to the coast for supplies and reinforcement.

  3. 3

How did the siege of Acre end?

    Model answer

Guy had blockaded it since 1189 with Saladin besieging him in turn, and the arrival of Philip Augustus and then Richard I with siege equipment forced the garrison to surrender in July 1191.

  4. 4

Why did Philip Augustus leave the crusade in 1191?

    Model answer

He had been seriously ill, he had achieved his vow with the fall of Acre, and the death of the count of Flanders offered him an opportunity in France that he did not want to leave to Richard's advantage.

  5. 5

What did Richard do to the prisoners taken at Acre?

    Model answer

When the agreed ransom, prisoner exchange and return of the True Cross were not delivered on time, he had some two thousand seven hundred captives executed in sight of Saladin's army.

  6. 6

Why, after his victory at Arsuf had opened the coast, did Richard twice turn back from Jerusalem?

    Model answer

Even if the city fell, Saladin's field army would still be intact, the supply line inland could not be held, and most of the crusaders would go home once their vow was fulfilled, leaving a city that could not be defended.
