  1. 1

Why did the monarchs expel the Jews?

    Model answer

They had concluded that the converso problem could not be solved while a Jewish community existed to draw converts back, so in March 1492 they ordered the Jews either to accept baptism or to leave the kingdoms within four months, taking no gold or silver with them.

  2. 2

What were the consequences of the expulsion?

    Model answer

Tens of thousands left for Portugal, North Africa and the Ottoman lands while many others converted, Spain lost skilled merchants, physicians and financiers, and the number of conversos under suspicion grew rather than fell.

  3. 3

How did the Muslims of Castile come to be Moriscos?

    Model answer

Cisneros abandoned patient instruction in Granada for pressure and mass baptisms, provoking the Alpujarras rising of 1499 to 1501; its defeat was treated as a breach of the surrender terms, and in 1502 Castile's Muslims were ordered to accept baptism or leave.

  4. 4

Why did the Morisco question remain unsolved?

    Model answer

Conversion was nominal and enforced, so a large community continued to speak Arabic and keep Muslim custom in private; they were distrusted as potential allies of the Ottomans and Barbary corsairs but were too numerous and too economically useful to remove.

  5. 5

Who were the conversos, and why were they suspected?

    Model answer

They were Jews and their descendants who had accepted baptism, many prominent in trade, finance, the professions and the Church; resentment of their success and doubt about the sincerity of conversions produced the charge that they were secretly judaizing.

  6. 6

On what authority was the Spanish Inquisition established, and who controlled it?

    Model answer

A papal bull of 1478 authorised it, but the crown named the inquisitors and it was governed by its own royal council, making it the one institution whose authority ran across all the Spanish kingdoms.
