Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What did France receive under the Treaty of Turin?

    Model answer

Nice and Savoy were transferred to France in 1860, confirmed by plebiscites, in return for accepting Piedmont's annexation of the central Italian states.

  2. 2

Why did the Italian policy damage Napoleon III at home?

    Model answer

Catholics never forgave the loss of most of the Papal States, liberals judged that he had abandoned Italy halfway at Villafranca, and the annexation of Nice and Savoy alarmed the other powers.

  3. 3

Why did France intervene in Mexico?

    Model answer

Juárez suspended payment of foreign debts in 1861, and Napoleon III used the joint debt expedition with Britain and Spain to try to found a Catholic Latin empire allied to France while the United States was distracted by civil war.

  4. 4

How did the Mexican venture end?

    Model answer

The puppet emperor Maximilian never controlled the country, guerrilla resistance and disease drained the army, and after the American Civil War United States pressure forced a French withdrawal, leaving Maximilian to be shot in 1867.

  5. 5

Describe the colonial expansion that took place under the Second Empire.

    Model answer

Algeria was consolidated and reconceived as an Arab kingdom under French protection, Faidherbe extended Senegal, Cochinchina was conquered and Cambodia made a protectorate, New Caledonia was annexed, and French capital cut the Suez Canal.

  6. 6

How did relations with Britain develop after the Crimea?

    Model answer

The two cooperated in China and signed the commercial treaty of 1860, but British opinion was repeatedly alarmed by French ironclads, the Suez project and the annexation of Nice and Savoy.
