Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe the position of the Ottoman Empire in 1520.

    Model answer

Suleiman had just succeeded to an empire that already held the Balkans up to the Danube and had recently conquered Syria and Egypt, giving the sultan the leadership of the Muslim world, the wealth of the Levant trade and a great army and fleet.

  2. 2

Why did the Ottoman advance concern Charles as soon as he was elected?

    Model answer

His imperial title made him the nominal defender of Christendom, his brother's Austrian lands lay directly in the Ottoman path, and his Spanish and Italian coasts were exposed to raiding from North Africa.

  3. 3

Trace the Ottoman advance in the Balkans in the 1520s.

    Model answer

Belgrade fell in 1521, opening the Danube route into Hungary; Rhodes was taken from the Knights of St John in 1522; and in 1526 the Hungarian army was destroyed at Mohács, where King Louis II was killed.

  4. 4

What were the consequences of the Battle of Mohács for the Habsburgs?

    Model answer

Ferdinand claimed the vacant crowns of Hungary and Bohemia through his wife, but the Ottomans backed the rival claim of John Zápolya, so Hungary was divided and the Habsburgs acquired a permanent land war on their eastern frontier.

  5. 5

Why did the siege of Vienna in 1529 fail?

    Model answer

Suleiman arrived late in the season after a wet march that cost him his heavy siege artillery, the garrison under Salm held the breaches, and with supplies failing and winter approaching he withdrew after about three weeks.

  6. 6

What effect did the siege of Vienna have inside the Empire?

    Model answer

It brought the Turkish danger home to the German princes and made them willing to vote taxes and troops, but it also gave the Protestants their strongest bargaining position, since Charles needed their aid and had to buy it with religious concessions.
