Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Explain what the dragooning of Ulster in 1797 involved.

    Model answer

General Lake was authorised to disarm the province, and troops used floggings, half-hangings, pitch-caps and house-burnings, which broke the northern United Irish organisation before the rising began.

  2. 2

How did the government damage the rebel leadership before the rising?

    Model answer

Informers enabled the arrest of most of the Leinster directory in March 1798, and Lord Edward FitzGerald was mortally wounded resisting capture in May, leaving the rising without effective central direction.

  3. 3

Where was the fighting of 1798 heaviest?

    Model answer

In County Wexford, where rebels held the county for weeks before defeat at Vinegar Hill in June, with separate risings in Antrim and Down; perhaps thirty thousand people died in a few months, with atrocities on both sides including the burning of prisoners at Scullabogue and widespread reprisal killings by the yeomanry.

  4. 4

Describe what became of the French intervention of August 1798.

    Model answer

Humbert landed a small force at Killala and routed troops at Castlebar before surrendering at Ballinamuck in September, and a later expedition carrying Tone was intercepted off Donegal, after which Tone was refused a soldier's execution and died of a self-inflicted wound in November.

  5. 5

Was the 1798 rising a political or a sectarian conflict?

    Model answer

This is the central debate: loyalist writers presented it as a Catholic war of religion, while historians such as Whelan and Curtin have argued that Wexford was politicised by United Irish organisation, though most accept that sectarian killing was real.

  6. 6

How did the rebellion lead to the Act of Union?

    Model answer

It convinced Pitt that the Irish parliament could neither govern nor defend Ireland and that only union with Britain would secure the island against France while making Catholic concessions safe.
