  1. 1

Why did Ottoman expansion in the Mediterranean threaten Spain directly?

    Model answer

Ottoman-backed corsair fleets from North Africa raided the coast of Aragon and Valencia, carried off captives and disrupted the sea lanes linking Spain to Italy.

  2. 2

What were the Spanish outposts in North Africa, and why were they vulnerable?

    Model answer

They were fortified coastal garrisons such as Oran and La Goletta, held to keep the corsairs in check, but they were isolated, expensive and easily cut off from the sea.

  3. 3

Who were the Moriscos, and why did the Ottoman threat make them a Spanish anxiety?

    Model answer

They were Muslims of Spain who had been forced to convert to Christianity, and the crown feared they would act as a fifth column in league with the corsairs and the sultan.

  4. 4

What connection was there between the Moriscos and Ottoman power?

    Model answer

Morisco appeals for help reached Istanbul and Algiers, and the great Morisco revolt in the Alpujarras from 1568 drew corsair support, tying down Spanish troops at the very moment Cyprus was attacked.

  5. 5

Who were the Barbary corsairs, and what was their relationship with the sultan?

    Model answer

They were the sea raiders of Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli, who acknowledged the sultan's overlordship and served in his fleets while operating largely on their own account.

  6. 6

How far did the Ottomans really threaten Spain itself?

    Model answer

They could raid, blockade and take islands and North African ports, but they never had the logistics to invade the Spanish mainland, and from 1578 the two powers agreed truces and turned elsewhere.
