Why did Stenka Razin's revolt attract such wide support?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Identify Stenka Razin.

    Model answer

He was a Don Cossack leader who raided Persian shipping in the Caspian between 1667 and 1669 and then in 1670 turned his following into a mass revolt along the Volga against landlords and officials.

  2. 2

Why did Razin's revolt attract such wide support?

    Model answer

He promised freedom from landlords, taxes and officials, so runaway serfs, poor Cossacks, boatmen and the non-Russian peoples of the Volga joined him, and he claimed to be acting for the Tsar against the boyars who had enserfed the people in 1649.

  3. 3

    How was Razin's revolt defeated?

    Model answer

After taking Tsaritsyn and Astrakhan he failed to storm Simbirsk in October 1670 and was beaten by regular troops with artillery; he was handed over by the Cossack elders and executed in Moscow in 1671, and the rebellion was followed by mass reprisals and tighter control of the frontier.

  4. 4

Describe the forms taken by resistance to westernisation.

    Model answer

Conservative clergy, townspeople and Old Believers denounced shaven faces, foreign dress, tobacco and the new calendar as sinful, some claimed that Peter was the Antichrist or an impostor swapped abroad, and passive resistance, flight and rumour were more common than open revolt.

  5. 5

What happened in the Streltsi revolt of 1698?

    Model answer

Four regiments posted to the frontier mutinied over pay and conditions and marched on Moscow to restore Sophia while Peter was abroad, but were scattered by regular troops under Gordon and Shein before he returned.

  6. 6

How did Peter punish the Streltsi?

    Model answer

He came home in a fury, reopened the investigation under torture and had over a thousand of the musketeers executed, their bodies left on display through the winter; the corps was disbanded and Sophia was forced to take the veil.
