  1. 1

    What were Cominform and Comecon?

    Model answer

Cominform, founded in 1947, co-ordinated and disciplined the European communist parties, while Comecon, founded in 1949, organised trade and economic planning among the eastern bloc states as an answer to Marshall Aid.

  2. 2

Why did the western powers reform the currency in their German zones in 1948?

    Model answer

The old currency was worthless and the black market rampant, and the western powers had decided to rebuild their zones as a single economy rather than wait for four-power agreement.

  3. 3

How did Stalin respond to the western currency reform?

    Model answer

He cut all land and water routes into West Berlin from June 1948, hoping to force the western powers to abandon either the currency reform or the city.

  4. 4

Explain why the western powers chose an airlift rather than force.

    Model answer

Sending an armed convoy risked war, while flying supplies in put the burden of firing the first shot on Stalin and demonstrated western resolve without provocation.

  5. 5

What were the results of the Berlin blockade?

    Model answer

The airlift kept the city supplied until Stalin gave up in May 1949, western prestige rose sharply, the founding of NATO was accelerated and Germany was formally split into two states later that year.

  6. 6

Explain the significance of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.

    Model answer

It bound the members to treat an armed attack on any one of them as an attack on all, so the United States was committed in peacetime to the defence of western Europe for the first time.
