Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why did Home Rule return to the political agenda after 1910?

    Model answer

Having offered Ireland only a limited Irish Council Bill in 1907, the Liberals emerged from the two elections of 1910 without a majority and dependent on Redmond's members, who made a Home Rule bill the price of their support.

  2. 2

Why was the Parliament Act of 1911 the essential precondition?

    Model answer

It replaced the Lords' absolute veto with a delay of two sessions, so a bill passed three times by the Commons would reach the statute book despite unionist peers.

  3. 3

Outline what the Home Rule Bill of 1912 proposed.

    Model answer

A Dublin parliament of two chambers with control of Irish domestic affairs, a reduced Irish representation at Westminster, and the reservation of the Crown, defence, foreign policy and ultimate supremacy to Westminster.

  4. 4

How did the Conservatives under Bonar Law respond to the 1912 Bill?

    Model answer

They argued that the Liberals had no mandate and had altered the constitution to force the measure through, and at Blenheim in July 1912 Bonar Law declared that he could imagine no length of resistance to which Ulster might go that he would not support.

  5. 5

Explain what the Solemn League and Covenant was.

    Model answer

It was the pledge signed on Ulster Day in September 1912 by well over two hundred thousand men, with a parallel declaration for women, binding signatories to use all means necessary to defeat Home Rule.

  6. 6

    Describe the Ulster Volunteer Force.

    Model answer

Formed in January 1913 from existing unionist clubs and drilling groups, it was a body of around a hundred thousand men organised on military lines to resist the imposition of a Dublin parliament.
