Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What was the earliest form of the Church's response to heresy?

    Model answer

Bishops relied on preaching, disputation and local synods, excommunicating the obstinate and leaving punishment to lay rulers, an approach that depended entirely on the energy of the individual bishop.

  2. 2

State what the Third Lateran Council of 1179 decreed about heresy.

    Model answer

It anathematised the heretics of southern France and their protectors and offered a remission of sins and Church protection to those who took up arms against them, bringing crusading language to bear on heresy for the first time.

  3. 3

What did the decree issued at Verona in 1184 establish?

    Model answer

It listed the condemned sects, required bishops to search out heresy in their dioceses once or twice a year, and ordered that the convicted be handed over to the secular power for punishment, with penalties for rulers who failed to co-operate.

  4. 4

How did Innocent III change the legal status of heresy in 1199?

    Model answer

He equated heresy with treason against God, applying the Roman law of lèse-majesté so that a heretic's goods could be confiscated and his heirs disinherited.

  5. 5

Why was the confiscation of property such an effective weapon?

    Model answer

It gave lay rulers and local officials a direct financial incentive to pursue heretics and it destroyed the wealth and standing of the families that had sheltered them, so the political base of a movement was attacked along with its beliefs.

  6. 6

    What triggered the Albigensian Crusade?

    Model answer

The murder of the papal legate Peter of Castelnau in 1208, following the excommunication of Raymond VI of Toulouse for failing to act against heresy, gave Innocent III grounds to summon a crusade within Christendom.
