Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How did Charles organise the government of Spain during his absences?

    Model answer

He ruled through a widening system of councils, adding those of Finance, the Indies and State, with expert secretaries such as Francisco de los Cobos handling business, and left a trusted regent — first the Empress Isabella, later Philip — to preside.

  2. 2

How did Charles pay for his wars?

    Model answer

By repeated grants from the Castilian Cortes, church taxation, the sale of interest-bearing crown bonds and of offices, and above all by loans from German and Genoese bankers secured on future revenue and American treasure, so that debt and its service grew far faster than income.

  3. 3

What was Charles's attitude to Morisco customs in Spain?

    Model answer

Although he ordered Aragon's Muslims to convert in the 1520s, he was persuaded in 1526 to suspend enforcement of the ban on Arabic language, dress and custom in Granada for a long period in return for a large payment, so Morisco practice was tolerated in fact.

  4. 4

    Describe Charles's relations with Rome.

    Model answer

They were often hostile: he fought Clement VII in the war of the League of Cognac, his unpaid troops sacked Rome in 1527 and imprisoned the pope, yet he was crowned by that same pope in 1530 and spent years pressing a reluctant papacy to summon a general council of the Church.

  5. 5

What was the Polyglot Bible, and why does it matter?

    Model answer

It was the great scholarly Bible produced at Alcalá under Cisneros and printed by 1517, setting the Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic and Latin texts side by side; it shows Spanish humanism at its height and reform pursued through learning inside the Catholic Church.

  6. 6

What did the alumbrados believe, and why were they condemned?

    Model answer

The illuminists claimed that the soul could be directly enlightened by God, making outward ceremony, ritual and clerical mediation unnecessary; the Inquisition condemned them in 1525 because that struck at the authority of the Church, and suspicion afterwards fell on mystics generally.
