Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe the state of English overseas trade in 1558.

    Model answer

It was dominated by the export of unfinished woollen cloth through Antwerp, an overdependence that left the economy exposed when that market was disrupted by war and rebellion in the Netherlands.

  2. 2

How did English merchants respond to the loss of the Antwerp market?

    Model answer

They shifted the cloth staple to Emden and Hamburg and sought new markets through chartered companies, including the Eastland Company in 1579, the Turkey Company in 1581 and the East India Company in 1600.

  3. 3

State what the Statute of Artificers of 1563 laid down.

    Model answer

It required a seven-year apprenticeship before a man could practise a trade, made annual wage assessment the duty of the justices of the peace, and compelled the unskilled to work in husbandry, restricting movement between employers.

  4. 4

Why did poverty increase in Elizabethan England?

    Model answer

The population grew from around three million to over four million while prices outran wages, enclosure and rack-renting displaced tenants, and the dissolution of the monasteries had removed a source of relief.

  5. 5

What distinction lay at the heart of Elizabethan poor law?

    Model answer

The impotent poor, who could not work through age, sickness or infancy, deserved relief, while the able-bodied vagrant was regarded as idle by choice and punished.

  6. 6

What did the Vagabonds Act of 1572 introduce?

    Model answer

It authorised the first compulsory local poor rate to fund relief, and prescribed whipping and boring through the ear for persistent vagrants.
