  1. 1

Outline the main terms of the Act of Union.

    Model answer

The Irish parliament was abolished from the start of 1801, Ireland sent a hundred MPs and a body of peers to Westminster, the two established churches were united, and trade between the countries was gradually freed.

  2. 2

Why did Pitt want a legislative union?

    Model answer

The rebellion of 1798 and the French attempts to land had shown that a separate Irish parliament left Britain strategically vulnerable, and he hoped a united parliament could safely concede Catholic claims.

  3. 3

Why did the Union fail in 1799 but pass in 1800?

    Model answer

After the first defeat the government used patronage, peerages and compensation for the owners of disenfranchised boroughs to build a majority, while Catholic leaders were encouraged to hope that emancipation would follow.

  4. 4

State what the Roman Catholic Relief Act of 1829 permitted.

    Model answer

It allowed Catholics to sit in Parliament and to hold nearly all civil and military offices, subject to a new oath.

  5. 5

What price accompanied Emancipation in 1829?

    Model answer

The Irish county franchise was raised from forty shillings to ten pounds, cutting the county electorate by around five-sixths and removing the poorer voters who had defeated the landlords.

  6. 6

How was Ireland governed within the Union?

    Model answer

It was administered from Dublin Castle by a Lord Lieutenant and a Chief Secretary answerable to the cabinet, with its own police force, judiciary and boards, so it was governed differently from the rest of the United Kingdom.
