Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Give the causes of the Irish rebellion of the 1590s.

    Model answer

Resentment at the extension of English administration and plantation, the erosion of Gaelic lordship, religious grievance, and the ambition of Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, who could count on Spanish support.

  2. 2

Outline the course of the Nine Years War in Ireland.

    Model answer

Tyrone destroyed an English force at the Yellow Ford in 1598 and spread the revolt across Ireland; Mountjoy defeated the rebels and their Spanish allies at Kinsale in 1601, and Tyrone submitted at Mellifont in 1603.

  3. 3

Why was the Irish war so damaging to Elizabeth?

    Model answer

It absorbed around twenty thousand troops and roughly two million pounds, more than any other undertaking of the reign, and forced the sale of crown lands and repeated taxation.

  4. 4

What happened to Essex in Ireland in 1599?

    Model answer

Given the largest army of the reign as Lord Lieutenant, he wasted it in marches in the south, made an unauthorised truce with Tyrone and returned to England without permission, bursting into the Queen's chamber and being placed under house arrest.

  5. 5

Why did Essex turn to rebellion in 1601?

    Model answer

He had lost his political influence to Robert Cecil, was barred from court and was ruined when Elizabeth refused to renew his monopoly on sweet wines, so he attempted to seize the court by force and remove his rivals.

  6. 6

Describe Essex's rebellion and why it failed.

    Model answer

In February 1601 he rode into the City with around two hundred followers expecting London to rise; the citizens stayed indoors, the government had been forewarned, and he surrendered and was executed later that month.
