Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What did Huskisson do about tariffs at the Board of Trade?

    Model answer

He cut duties on imported manufactures, in some cases from about fifty per cent to twenty, reduced the protection given to silk and wool, and lowered duties on raw materials so that British industry could produce more cheaply.

  2. 2

How did Huskisson change the Navigation Acts?

    Model answer

The Reciprocity of Duties Act of 1823 let Britain make treaties admitting foreign ships on the same terms as her own, and colonial ports were opened to foreign trade, loosening the old shipping monopoly.

  3. 3

What did Peel do about capital punishment at the Home Office?

    Model answer

He consolidated the tangle of criminal statutes and removed the death penalty from about a hundred offences, mostly minor property crimes, arguing that juries refused to convict when the punishment was out of all proportion.

  4. 4

State the main provisions of the Gaols Act of 1823.

    Model answer

Gaols in London and the larger towns were to be inspected regularly, gaolers were to be paid salaries instead of taking fees from prisoners, prisoners were to be classified and given work and instruction, and women were to be supervised by female warders.

  5. 5

What did the Metropolitan Police Act of 1829 create?

    Model answer

A single uniformed, salaried police force of about three thousand men for London, run from Scotland Yard by two commissioners answerable to the Home Secretary.

  6. 6

Why were the Combination Laws repealed in 1824 and then amended in 1825?

    Model answer

Francis Place and Joseph Hume convinced a select committee that legal unions would be peaceable, but the strike wave that followed alarmed parliament, so the Act of 1825 allowed combination only to bargain over wages and hours and made intimidation an offence.
