Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Who was Hugh O'Neill?

    Model answer

He was an Ulster lord brought up under English protection, granted the earldom of Tyrone in 1585, who then had himself inaugurated in the Gaelic manner as The O'Neill in 1595 and led the great Ulster rebellion.

  2. 2

Over what years did Tyrone's rebellion take place?

    Model answer

It ran from 1594 to 1603 and is often called the Nine Years War, beginning with fighting in Fermanagh and Ulster before Tyrone came out openly against the Crown in 1595.

  3. 3

What were the political causes of Tyrone's rebellion?

    Model answer

The Crown was pushing sheriffs, garrisons, English law and provincial administration into Ulster, which threatened to reduce a Gaelic lord to an ordinary landowner, and Tyrone's personal feud with Sir Henry Bagenal sharpened the conflict.

  4. 4

How did land policy contribute to Tyrone's rebellion?

    Model answer

The plantation of Munster after the Desmond rebellions showed Gaelic lords that defeat meant confiscation and English settlement, and Ulster lords feared their own territories would be taken next.

  5. 5

What part did religion play in Tyrone's cause?

    Model answer

He presented the war as a Catholic struggle against a heretic queen in order to justify it and to attract Spanish and papal support, and while some historians see this as opportunism, Counter-Reformation clergy were genuinely active in Ulster.

  6. 6

What were Tyrone's objectives at the start?

    Model answer

He initially sought the withdrawal of sheriffs and garrisons from Ulster and recognition of his own authority over the province, presenting himself as a loyal subject seeking redress.
