Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How was the Italian peninsula governed in 1789?

    Model answer

It was divided among about eleven separate states, including the Kingdom of Sardinia ruled from Turin, Austrian Lombardy, the republics of Venice and Genoa, Tuscany, Modena and Parma, the Papal States and the Bourbon Kingdom of Naples and Sicily.

  2. 2

What divided Italians apart from politics in 1789?

    Model answer

Most spoke mutually unintelligible dialects rather than Tuscan Italian, literacy was very low, internal tariffs and poor roads kept trade local, and the commercial north had little in common with the feudal, agrarian south.

  3. 3

What was the immediate impact of the French Revolution on Italy?

    Model answer

French armies from 1796 swept away the old states and set up satellite republics such as the Cisalpine, the Roman and the short-lived Parthenopean Republic of 1799, giving a minority of educated Italians their first taste of constitutional government.

  4. 4

How was Italy organised under Napoleon?

    Model answer

It was reduced to three units: territory annexed directly to France, the Kingdom of Italy in the north under a viceroy, and the Kingdom of Naples ruled first by Joseph Bonaparte and then by Murat.

  5. 5

What did Napoleonic rule leave behind in Italy?

    Model answer

It left efficient centralised administration, the Civil Code, secular education and the sale of church land, together with the example of Italians serving in large armies and states, but also resentment of conscription, taxation and French plunder.

  6. 6

What did the Vienna Settlement do to Italy?

    Model answer

It restored the old rulers, gave Lombardy and Venetia directly to Austria, placed Habsburg princes in Tuscany, Modena and Parma, returned the Pope to the Papal States and enlarged Piedmont with Genoa as a barrier against France.
