  1. 1

    How did Jahangir's reign begin?

    Model answer

Salim succeeded his father in 1605 as Jahangir, seizer of the world, and at once faced the rebellion of his own son Khusrau in 1606, which he crushed, blinding Khusrau and executing his supporters.

  2. 2

How would you describe Jahangir as a ruler?

    Model answer

He was an educated connoisseur of painting and natural history who kept his own memoirs and displayed a famous chain of justice at Agra, but he was addicted to wine and opium and left much of the routine of government to his ministers and his wife.

  3. 3

Describe Nur Jahan's role at court.

    Model answer

Married to Jahangir in 1611, she became the dominant figure of his later years, issuing orders, having coins struck in her name and heading a court group with her father Itimad-ud-Daula and her brother Asaf Khan, until her attempt to control the succession turned Prince Khurram against her.

  4. 4

How did Persian influence show itself at the Mughal court?

    Model answer

Persian was the language of administration and poetry, Persian nobles and artists were prominent, the court copied Safavid dress, gardens and painting styles, and the emperors conducted an elaborate diplomacy with Isfahan even while disputing Kandahar.

  5. 5

Describe the main forms of Mughal court ceremonial.

    Model answer

The emperor appeared daily at the jharokha window so that his subjects could see him, gave audience in the public and private halls at fixed hours, received prostration from courtiers whose rank fixed their exact position, and was weighed against gold and silver on his birthdays for distribution as alms.

  6. 6

What did Jahangir achieve against Mewar?

    Model answer

His son Khurram forced the submission of Rana Amar Singh in 1615 on generous terms that left Mewar its lands and honour in return for recognising Mughal overlordship, ending a conflict Akbar had not been able to finish.
