Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why did Italy stay neutral when war broke out in 1914?

    Model answer

Its obligation under the Triple Alliance applied only to a defensive war and Austria-Hungary had not consulted it, the army and economy were unready after Libya, and neutrality allowed Italy to bargain with both sides.

  2. 2

What was Italy promised by the Treaty of London in 1915?

    Model answer

The Trentino and South Tyrol to the Brenner, Trieste and Istria, much of the Dalmatian coast, a foothold in Albania and a share of any colonial redistribution, in return for entering the war within a month.

  3. 3

How was the decision to enter the war taken, and why was that significant?

    Model answer

The treaty was negotiated in secret by the king and a small group of ministers and presented to a parliament in which most deputies opposed war, and popular demonstrations helped force acceptance, so Italy went to war against the wishes of its own majority.

  4. 4

Describe the fighting on the Italian front from 1915.

    Model answer

The war became a series of repeated frontal offensives along the Isonzo against Austrian positions in the mountains, and Cadorna's reliance on mass assault and savage discipline, including summary executions, brought enormous casualties for tiny gains.

  5. 5

What happened at Caporetto in 1917?

    Model answer

A combined Austro-German attack using new infiltration tactics broke the Italian line, and the army fell back some seventy miles to the Piave with hundreds of thousands taken prisoner and huge quantities of equipment lost.

  6. 6

How did Italy recover from Caporetto, and how did the war end for Italy?

    Model answer

Diaz replaced Cadorna, improved conditions and morale and held the Piave, and in the autumn of 1918 the offensive at Vittorio Veneto shattered the disintegrating Austro-Hungarian army and brought an armistice in early November.
