Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Which laws policed sex and marriage across the colour line?

    Model answer

The Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act of 1949 banned interracial marriage and the Immorality Amendment Act of 1950 made all sexual relations between whites and other South Africans a criminal offence.

  2. 2

What was the purpose of the Group Areas Act of 1950?

    Model answer

It empowered the government to declare urban areas for the exclusive occupation of one racial group, which meant the forced removal of black, coloured and Indian communities from land wanted by whites.

  3. 3

How did influx control and the pass system work after 1952?

    Model answer

Every African man, and from 1956 women too, had to carry a reference book recording identity, tax and permission to be in a white area, and could be arrested and removed if it was not in order.

  4. 4

What role were the reserves meant to play in apartheid?

    Model answer

They were to be the only places where Africans held land and political rights, so that black workers in white cities could be treated as temporary migrants rather than citizens.

  5. 5

State what the Separate Amenities Act of 1953 permitted.

    Model answer

It allowed public facilities such as beaches, benches, transport and post office counters to be reserved by race, and specifically stated that separate facilities need not be equal.

  6. 6

What was the purpose of the Bantu Education Act of 1953?

    Model answer

It took African schooling out of the hands of the missions and placed it under the state, with a curriculum and funding designed to prepare black children only for labouring and service roles.
