Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why did industrialisation benefit African Americans least?

    Model answer

Northern factories rarely hired Black workers except as strike-breakers, most craft unions excluded them, and in the South they were confined to agriculture, domestic service and the hardest jobs in mining, lumber and iron, so the great expansion of industrial employment largely bypassed them and left nine-tenths of the Black population in the rural South.

  2. 2

Give three African American responses to Gilded Age conditions.

    Model answer

Around fifteen thousand Exodusters left the South for Kansas in 1879 to escape Redeemer rule, Booker T Washington built Tuskegee from 1881 as a strategy of economic self-help, and Ida B Wells launched an investigative anti-lynching campaign from 1892 that used statistics to demolish the claim that lynching punished rape.

  3. 3

What did Westward Expansion mean for Native American Indians in these years?

    Model answer

It meant the final destruction of independent life: the last free bands were confined after 1877, the buffalo were gone, the Dawes Act of 1887 broke up reservations into allotments and released the surplus to settlers, and the killings at Wounded Knee in 1890 coincided with the census announcement that a frontier line no longer existed.

  4. 4

How did Westward Expansion affect women and workers?

    Model answer

The Homestead Act allowed single women and widows to claim land in their own names and the new western states were the first to grant women the vote, but frontier households demanded punishing labour with little support; for workers the West meant company towns, absentee mining corporations and some of the most violent labour conflicts of the period.

  5. 5

Summarise Frederick Jackson Turner's frontier thesis and the New Western History that displaced it.

    Model answer

In 1893 Turner argued that the receding frontier had continually renewed American democracy and individualism and that its closing marked the end of an era; from the 1980s historians such as Patricia Limerick recast the West as a place of conquest, dispossession, racial hierarchy and federal subsidy in which Native Americans, Hispanics, Chinese labourers and women were the people the thesis had written out.

  6. 6

Describe the nature of the north-south divide over civil rights.

    Model answer

Redeemer governments cut taxes and public schooling, entrenched sharecropping and convict leasing and reduced Black political participation, while Henry Grady's New South publicity promised industrial progress and racial harmony; northern opinion, tired of Reconstruction and increasingly persuaded by scientific racism, accepted sectional reconciliation at the price of Black rights.
