Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What did the Irish Land Act of 1881 concede?

    Model answer

It granted the three Fs — fair rents fixed by land courts, fixity of tenure for tenants who paid them, and free sale of the tenant's interest — which broke the landlord's absolute right over his property.

  2. 2

How did the Land League put pressure on Irish landlords?

    Model answer

Founded in 1879 under Davitt and Parnell, it organised tenants to resist eviction and to ostracise those who took an evicted man's farm — a tactic named after Captain Boycott — and it made the countryside close to ungovernable.

  3. 3

What were the Kilmainham Treaty and the Phoenix Park murders?

    Model answer

In 1882 Gladstone released Parnell from Kilmainham gaol in return for his help in calming Ireland and a settlement of tenants' arrears; days later the new Chief Secretary, Lord Frederick Cavendish, and his under-secretary were stabbed to death in Phoenix Park, which forced fresh coercion on the government.

  4. 4

What did the Reform Act of 1884 and the Redistribution Act of 1885 do?

    Model answer

Household franchise was extended from the boroughs to the counties, raising the United Kingdom electorate to about five and a half million, and constituencies were then redrawn as mostly single-member seats of roughly equal population.

  5. 5

    What was the Primrose League?

    Model answer

A Conservative organisation founded in 1883 in Disraeli's memory, which recruited hundreds of thousands of members, welcomed women through its Ladies' Grand Council, and combined social life with unpaid electioneering at a time when the law had just capped spending on paid agents.

  6. 6

Why did Gladstone's government occupy Egypt in 1882?

    Model answer

A nationalist revolt threatened the Suez route and European bondholders; the fleet bombarded Alexandria and Wolseley's victory at Tel-el-Kebir left Britain in occupation of a country a Liberal government had no wish to govern.
