Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What was the Navarre inheritance, and how did Henry come by it?

    Model answer

He inherited the small Pyrenean kingdom of Navarre with its French territories from his mother Jeanne d'Albret on her death in 1572, having been brought up by her as a Calvinist.

  2. 2

How did Henry become heir to the French throne?

    Model answer

He was the senior prince of the blood in the Bourbon line, and the death of the last of Catherine de' Medici's sons other than the king, in 1584, made him next in succession under the Salic law.

  3. 3

How did Catholic France respond to the prospect of a Protestant king?

    Model answer

The Catholic League allied with Philip II of Spain at the end of 1584 to exclude him, and the Pope declared him excommunicate and incapable of the throne.

  4. 4

What made Henry a formidable soldier?

    Model answer

He was personally brave, quick in the field and good with troops, and his victories at Coutras in 1587, Arques in 1589 and Ivry in 1590 kept his cause alive when he held little territory.

  5. 5

What difficulties faced Henry when Henry III was assassinated in 1589?

    Model answer

Much of the Catholic nobility in the royal army deserted him, the League held Paris and most great towns, the League proclaimed a rival king, and Spanish troops were operating in France.

  6. 6

How did the Parlement of Paris help him in 1593?

    Model answer

It ruled that the fundamental law of the kingdom barred any foreign prince from the throne, which destroyed the Spanish candidacy and left conversion as the only obstacle to Henry's accession.
