Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why was Buxar in 1764 arguably more decisive than Plassey?

    Model answer

Hector Munro defeated the combined armies of the nawab of Bengal, the nawab of Awadh and the Mughal emperor, so victory was won against the leading powers of northern India rather than by conspiracy.

  2. 2

State what was granted by the Treaty of Allahabad in 1765.

    Model answer

Shah Alam II granted the Company the diwani, the right to collect and administer the revenues of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, in return for an annual tribute.

  3. 3

Explain Clive's dual system of government in Bengal.

    Model answer

The Company took the revenues as diwan while the nawab remained responsible for law, order and administration, which gave the Company income without the cost of governing and left the nawab with responsibility but no resources.

  4. 4

What did Clive attempt to reform during his second governorship of Bengal?

    Model answer

Between 1765 and 1767 he banned the taking of presents and restricted the private inland trade of Company servants, and he faced down a mutiny of officers protesting at cuts to their allowances in 1766.

  5. 5

What was the Bengal famine of 1770, and why is it central to judgements of Company rule?

    Model answer

A catastrophic famine after harvest failure killed a large part of Bengal's population, and critics argued that the Company's rigid revenue demands and its servants' grain dealing made a natural disaster far worse.

  6. 6

Outline what the Regulating Act of 1773 did.

    Model answer

It gave the Company a government loan in return for supervision, created a Governor-General of Bengal with a council and authority over the other presidencies, and established a supreme court at Calcutta.
