Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe the condition of Venice around 1400.

    Model answer

It was a wealthy maritime republic with a commercial empire of ports and islands in the eastern Mediterranean, dominating trade between Europe and the Levant, and from 1404 it was also expanding onto the mainland of northern Italy.

  2. 2

Outline the political system of Venice.

    Model answer

Government rested on the Great Council of adult patricians, which elected the Senate, the Signoria and the Doge, while the Council of Ten handled security, and the Doge held office for life under strict restrictions.

  3. 3

Why was Venice so politically stable?

    Model answer

The closing of the Great Council in 1297 fixed a hereditary patrician ruling class that avoided factional civil war, offices were short and collective, and elaborate checks prevented any family or Doge from seizing personal power.

  4. 4

Which economic conditions in Venice encouraged the Renaissance?

    Model answer

Profits from the spice, silk and grain trades, the shipbuilding of the Arsenal, and glass and luxury manufacture gave patrician families and the state large surpluses to spend on building and painting.

  5. 5

Explain what the scuole were and why they matter for Venetian art.

    Model answer

They were lay confraternities that drew members from the citizen class and commissioned large cycles of paintings for their halls, giving artists such as Carpaccio and Tintoretto some of their greatest commissions.

  6. 6

How did the Greek East influence Venetian culture?

    Model answer

Centuries of trade and rule in Greek lands left a strong Byzantine strain in Venetian art, seen in the mosaics of San Marco, and the city housed the largest Greek community in the west, so that when Cardinal Bessarion left his great collection of Greek manuscripts to Venice in 1468 it became a leading centre of Greek scholarship.
