Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe the legal and economic position of African Americans at the end of the Civil War in 1865.

    Model answer

The Thirteenth Amendment, ratified in December 1865, abolished slavery and freed roughly four million people, but they emerged with no land, almost no capital and very high rates of illiteracy, and remained dependent on the planters who had owned them.

  2. 2

Describe the work of the Freedmen's Bureau.

    Model answer

Set up in March 1865, it distributed food and medical aid, negotiated and enforced labour contracts between freedpeople and planters, ran courts to hear their complaints, and helped found around four thousand schools and colleges such as Howard and Fisk before Congress wound it down in 1872.

  3. 3

What were the Black Codes and what were they designed to achieve?

    Model answer

They were laws passed by southern states in 1865 and 1866 that restricted freedpeople to plantation labour through vagrancy and apprenticeship rules, annual contracts and bans on owning certain property, so that a form of servitude survived emancipation in all but name.

  4. 4

State what the Fourteenth Amendment of 1868 established.

    Model answer

It made everyone born in the United States a citizen, and forbade any state to deny due process of law or the equal protection of the laws, which became the constitutional foundation for almost all later civil rights litigation.

  5. 5

What political gains did African Americans make under Radical Reconstruction, and how were they lost?

    Model answer

Around two thousand Black men held public office, including Hiram Revels and Blanche Bruce as senators for Mississippi, but Redeemer Democrats regained control state by state and the disputed election of 1876 produced the Compromise of 1877, under which Hayes withdrew the last federal troops and left southern Black voters unprotected.

  6. 6

How did the Ku Klux Klan operate after 1866, and how did the federal government respond?

    Model answer

Founded in Tennessee in 1866, it used night-riding, whipping, arson and murder to drive Black voters and Republican officials out of politics; Congress replied with the Enforcement Acts of 1870 and 1871, which brought federal prosecutions and broke the first Klan, though the will to enforce them faded quickly.
