What changed in Palestine as a result of the first waves of Jewish immigration?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe Palestine and its population before 1914.

    Model answer

It was not a single Ottoman province but was divided between the district of Jerusalem and the vilayet of Beirut; of roughly 700,000 inhabitants the great majority were Arabic-speaking Muslims with a substantial Arab Christian minority, and the Jewish population, swollen by recent immigration, numbered around 60,000, most of them living in the towns.

  2. 2

Explain the origins of political Zionism.

    Model answer

Persecution in the Russian empire and the antisemitism exposed by the Dreyfus affair convinced Theodor Herzl that Jews needed a state of their own, an argument he made in Der Judenstaat in 1896 and organised at the first Zionist Congress at Basel in 1897, which created the institutions, including later the Jewish National Fund, to buy land and settle Palestine.

  3. 3

What changed in Palestine as a result of the first waves of Jewish immigration?

    Model answer

The immigrations of the 1880s and of the decade before 1914 established agricultural colonies and the new town of Tel Aviv, and the second wave brought socialist settlers who founded the first kibbutz and insisted on employing only Jewish labour; land was bought largely from absentee landlords in Beirut and Damascus, which displaced the Arab tenants who had farmed it.

  4. 4

How did Arabs in Palestine respond before 1914?

    Model answer

Notables petitioned Istanbul and Arab deputies raised the question in the Ottoman parliament after 1908, newspapers such as Filastin campaigned against land sales and immigration, peasants resisted eviction locally, and the grievance became entangled with the wider Arab nationalist movement that held its first congress in Paris in 1913.

  5. 5

Why is the Hussein-McMahon correspondence controversial?

    Model answer

In 1915 and 1916 the British High Commissioner in Egypt promised Sharif Hussein British support for Arab independence in return for revolt against the Ottomans, but excluded the areas lying to the west of the districts of Damascus, Homs, Hama and Aleppo; Arabs argued this did not cover Palestine, which lies south rather than west of that line, while Britain later insisted it did.

  6. 6

What did the Sykes-Picot agreement of 1916 provide for?

    Model answer

The secret Anglo-French understanding divided the Ottoman Arab provinces into zones of direct rule and influence, with France taking Syria and Lebanon and Britain Mesopotamia and the ports of Haifa and Acre, while most of Palestine was to come under an unspecified international administration, an arrangement plainly at odds with the promises made to Hussein.
