Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How did France govern Indochina before 1945?
Model answer
It ruled through a federation of Vietnamese territories with Laos and Cambodia, using compliant local rulers such as the emperor Bao Dai, while exploiting rubber and rice for export and taxing peasants heavily.
- 2
Why did the Second World War weaken French authority in Indochina?
Model answer
Japan occupied the colony and in 1945 swept the French administration aside, destroying the myth of European supremacy and giving nationalists the chance to organise and arm.
- 3
Define the Viet Minh.
Model answer
It was the nationalist and communist front founded by Ho Chi Minh in 1941 to fight the Japanese and the French, with a peasant base and a guerrilla army led by Giap.
- 4
How did the French war against the Viet Minh become part of the Cold War?
Model answer
After China and the USSR recognised Ho's government in 1950, the United States began financing the French effort as a barrier to communism, eventually paying for most of the cost of the war.
- 5
What happened at Dien Bien Phu in 1954?
Model answer
Giap surrounded the French base with artillery dragged onto the surrounding hills, cut its air supply and forced its surrender in May, destroying French will to continue the war.
- 6
